THE HONEST TO GOODNESS TRUE STORY ABOUT ME AND STU. Many people ask authors where they get their ideas. Stu has an interesting story about how he became real. I was very happily asleep one night when a little voice in my head (you know the one that says stuff like: "don't forget your umbrella and boots,") woke me up. It said: "Write a story about an ostrich and an alien!" It was 3 o'clock in the morning, for goodness sake. I thought the little voice was nuts. I told it: "No, I want to go back to sleep, and I have no ideas, no plans about writing a story about ostriches and/or aliens. Go away!" It didn't care. An hour later, after arguing with that annoying, persistent little voice, I got up and began to get to know Stu. Evidently, he was awakened at three o'clock as well. Still, he wasn't as cranky about it as I was because he had lots of unusual adventures he wanted to tell me. And by five o'clock that morning, the first draft of Stu and the Aliens was finished. Sometimes we have no idea that wonderful things are coming to us. Simply listen, even if you'd rather snooze a little longer.
All of our lives are collections of moments, thoughts, discoveries, and people. I am dedicating the stories of Stu to one of the sweetest souls I have ever met. His name was James Nelson. His mother had syphilis, and when he was born, he had brain damage. His body was ravaged by it, but his mind was strong. He lived in a state institution where I worked. One day I learned that it was his birthday. I told him that I would get him a present. The only thing he ever wanted, he told me, was to sit by a window and listen to children laugh. And so, because of James, Stu and I cherish this simple joy. Thank you, James. Because of you, whenever I hear a child laugh I know that I am rich.
thank you for coming to see us. we love to see you. stu's mission in life is simply to help people find a giggle and a smile, and to know that they are very loved.
